Shishtavec is the largest village in the Gora Region of Albania. The Gorani people represent a Muslim community, speaking Slavic dialect and inhabiting the poor areas of the Šar Mountains. The villagers of Shishtavec often sound desperate and do believe that anyone, who has called in at their village, could be a Messiah, or that an ordinary Bulgarian passport could relieve them from poverty. The slow assimilation of that community seems logical, but on the other hand, the Gorani people have preserved for centuries their distinctive features and patriarchal habits. Working abroad for a living has been part of their way of life for a very long time and that is noticeable in the heart-breaking folk songs.
